My phone still greets me in the morning with the weather conditions in Brooklyn. You can imagine my surprise when I went outside this morning and felt the -9 degree wind chill in my face and not the balmy 60 degrees I was half expecting. Who knew it gets this cold this quickly in Minneapolis and who knew the weather patterns were so different from the east coast?
I'm escaping this arctic tundra and mylovely family, for a weekend in NYC. Because really, what's holiday shopping without Henri Bendel?
While in DC last week, Henry and I met up with fellow blogger and dear friend, HGal of Deviated Path. We'd never met in person, but have spoken nearly every day, since getting to know each other on a message board for mommies. We were unlikely friends and only became close after she told me to "shut-up" one time. It was so much fun to meet her and her beautiful daughter Emma, in person and now I treasure our friendship even more.
The past week has been mostly a shit show with a couple of really great moments thrown in. My mother was in the hospital with some heart issues early last week and it was frightening at first, then exhausting. When I received the news that she'd just been taken by ambulance, I fell into this creepy calm that always seems to overtake me during emergencies.
It reminded me of September 11th, when strangely, before calling anyone else, I dialed my florist to tell her that I was not in my office that morning, was alive and would, in fact, still need her services for my wedding the next month. That's just how my brain functions when I'm in shock.
My mother was able to be home for Thanksgiving and is thankfully recovering beautifully.
On the lighter side, we flew to Washington DC to spend the holiday with Nick's family. I got to see a very special friend, who I'll tell you about later and my sister took the train from NYC and met up for some quality Henry time and a little rock n roll.
And in a moment that will probably live on as his greatest, Nick was invited on stage, to rock with The Hold Steady.
One night in St. Barth's, many, many years ago (Five to be precise), Nick and I had just finished dinner and were strolling the quiet streets when a seemingly crazed man came running by shouting, "Le Beaujolais est arrive!!" He motioned for us to follow him, but we could barely keep up with his fast pace. As we ran after him Nick gave me a quick overview of Le Beaujolais Nouveau. We followed him around a few corners and arrived at a tiny wine store that was packed with french vacationers drinking the (free)immature wine. It was such a fun celebration.
And tonight, even though no one is running and shouting through the streets of Minneapolis, we'll be celebrating at our house. Happy 5th Anniversary Nick!
Want to celebrate with us? Here are some beaujolais thoughts from Minneapolis food critic extraordinaire, Andrew Zimmern.
Last night we roasted a squash for dinner, but didn't end up using it. This morning our house guest added it, along with some carrots, to the pancake mix and Henry got a hefty helping of hidden veggies. The pancakes were sweet, moist and totally delicious.

Since y'all are going to go ahead and have babies no matter what I think, you should really announce the arrival of your junior in beautiful, artistic style. (Guarantee a spot on the fridge for a v. long time)
In the Halloween video you may have heard someone proclaim, "I'm pregnant" and I can assure you that the voice was not mine. If you listen closely, my voice is the whiny one telling Henry to put the Hershey bar in his pumpkin and it's my friend, while denying a glass of port, who reports that she is with child.
I appreciate the congratulatory emails and I'm sorry to those who I inadvertently offended by not sharing the non-news personally.
I'm the farthest thing from being pregnant and would actually (since we are on the subject) like to call for moratorium on all child bearing, because I just can't keep up and why is everyone in the world pregnant and what's so wrong with only having one really adorable child?
Keith Ellison is running for an open seat against anti-choice Alan
Fine, whose campaign website states, "I don't believe that the abortion
option should be taken outside of the case of rape, incest, or the life
of the mother being at risk."
Pro-choice fact: Ellison has a solidly pro-choice voting record in the Minnesota House of Representatives.
